under-appreciation in the workforce.
You, Me and SME
As defined by Statistics Canada, a woman-owned SME (small and medium enterprises) requires 51% or more of the company shares to be owned by women. In 2017, women-owned SME accounted for only 15.6% of Canadian SME’s (Statistics Canada). It hurts us to see this percentage so small, so why aren’t there more women-owned businesses?
An Educated Advantage
With almost 20% more females obtaining a tertiary degree than males in 2018 (70% compared to 53%, OCED Education at a Glance), females are more than capable of fulfilling and succeeding in higher positions. If this is the case, why are we still seeing less females in positions of power?

Beating the Wage Gap
The wage gap is unfortunately still a reality with 2020 holding a 23% difference in average income (NewsWire) and doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon unless the biases and barriers against women are eliminated. How can we move past these biases, barriers and stereotypes as to not restrict women to being the primary caregivers of the household?

What Can We Do?
We not only need systemic change to ensure women are rightfully paid for what they do, which starts with consumers speaking with their wallets instead of their words. Additionally, we also need to properly educate the passionate women that are determined to manage businesses to eliminate the doubts and fears that come with managing! We need to be the change we want to see!
