Barriers to Bridges: My Odyssey with Accessible Creates
Successful Entrepreneur Stories Podcast
The first rays of dawn painted the sky as I, Sydney Elaine Butler, sat by my window, lost in thought. The journey to founding “Accessible Creates” was not a linear one. It was a tapestry
woven with threads of challenges, insights, and a relentless drive to make a difference.
Growing up, I, Sydney Elaine Butler, was no stranger to the challenges that came with needing special accommodations. Speech therapy sessions were a regular part of my school life. With the right support, I soared, but without it, I faltered. This duality of experiences taught me early on about the importance of accessibility and the profound impact it can have on an individual’s life. Fast forward to 2020, the year I graduated amidst a global pandemic. Armed with a degree and a burning passion, I stepped into the corporate world as an HR assistant. But the reality of the workplace was starkly different from the inclusive utopia I had envisioned. The rhetoric of creating an environment where everyone thrives was just that – mere words without action.
The turning point came when I, once physically fit, began to grapple with chronic pain due to a medical condition. The workplace that once seemed welcoming now felt alienating. Colleagues who once shared coffee breaks with me now looked through me, unable to comprehend the sudden change in my physical condition. Their lack of understanding and compassion was a stark reminder of the disconnect between what we preach and what we practice.
One evening, as I sat in my office, the weight of my experiences pressed heavily on my shoulders. The memories of my school days, the challenges of the workplace, and the pain of being misunderstood converged into a single question: “What is it that I truly want to accomplish?” The answer was clear. I wanted to bridge the gap between rhetoric and reality. I wanted to create workplaces where everyone, regardless of their physical or mental challenges, could truly thrive.
The decision to leave the comfort of a 9-to-5 job and venture into the unknown world of entrepreneurship was not an easy one. But I knew that as a consultant, trainer, and speaker, my voice would carry further, and I could effect real change.
At the heart of Accessible Creates is the value of resilience. From undergoing speech therapy to battling depression as a teenager, and from graduating in a pandemic to hitting rock bottom in 2017, my life has been a testament to the indomitable human spirit. Every challenge I faced, every obstacle I overcame, has shaped my resolve to make the world a better place, not just for me but for countless others like me.
