We experience bullsh*t in our lives all the time which can weigh us down, especially when it comes to our business lives. How can we overcome this bullsh*t and succeed? Listen to best-selling author Paige Johnson-Serjue’s three tips to break free of the bullsh*t

Step One: Be Okay with Failure

You need to be okay with failure. If you are trying to be an influencer, build your brand, and work with other brands, you need to be okay with failing. We have such a negative connotation with the idea of failure, but we need to remind ourselves to fail fast and fail hard when things don’t work out. You need to look at what you can learn from it, how you can do better, and understand how not to do something. A great example of this is the fact that my business stemmed from failure! Long story short, I went into a major in university that wasn’t right for me. I ended up being placed on academic probation and was on the verge of academic suspension after getting caught for plagiarism. I switched programs and ended up graduating with honors, which taught me so many things about myself from that failure. If I thought that I should’ve just got kicked out of school since I put myself in this situation, I would’ve never gotten out of that dark hole. You need to force yourself to be present in that situation to figure out what to do next.

Step Two: Define Your Success

When I started Paige One of Some, I wanted to get paid this week. I wanted to do this full time, but it didn’t happen right away which honestly pissed me off. I gave up soon after for a couple months, simply because I didn’t clearly define what success was to me. No matter what you were planning to do, you need to understand that starting is the hardest thing to do. Social media has become a place of instant gratification where we obsess over the numbers we have. If you’re sticking with your passion and writing down those small goals to attain them, eventually you will get to that bigger picture.

Step Three: Your Story Sets You Apart

Everyone is so worried about a niche topic, what sets them apart, and how they can be different. What makes you different is your story. A lot of us (myself included) get stuck in the scenario of “Well, I’m not an expert in this and I can’t do this since there’s people doing this already,” which makes you not want to do it anymore, but you can’t let that stop you. When you look at the cereal aisle in your local supermarket, there are like 50 brands of cereal that are making a killing even though they are selling the exact same sh*t because no one told them that there was too much competition or that they didn’t know enough.

Visualizing the B.S.

Go grab your wallet and take a bill out, it doesn’t matter the value. 5, 10, 20, 100, whatever. For every bit of bullsh*t you have encountered, I want you to make a fold. Every time someone told you that you couldn’t reach your goal, every doubt you’ve had, anything like that. Think hard and don’t stop folding until you’ve ran out of bullsh*t. When you finish, unfold the money, and look at it. If I went to the store and tried to purchase something with this crumpled money, would they accept it? Yes! Despite all the bullsh*t, the bill is intact and holds the same value as it did before the folds. The only person holding you back is yourself!
