The YouTube landscape has changed dramatically since its inception in 2005, which can make it a difficult landscape to navigate but fear not! Expert and YouTube influencer Sabby BG gives insight into the influencer market while sharing some tips on how to make money.

The State of Influencer Marketing

The influencer market has been growing extremely fast, all thanks to how integral social media has become in our everyday lives. In 2016, the influencer marketing industry was worth around $1.7 billion which has risen to $9.7 billion in 2020, with estimates putting the 2021 value at a whopping $13.8 billion. These numbers show that there is – and will continue to be – a market for influencers. But with the sheer size of the market and the immense competition present from the influencers that have been putting in the work, how can you make influencing a financially viable option for yourself? To understand how to do this, we need to identify the tiers of influencers and how engagement works across them.

Influencing

There are typically five or six tiers, but we will only be looking at the lowest and highest end of influencers. A nano influencer is someone who has 1000 to 10,000 followers while a mega influencer has over one million followers. You’d think that a mega influencer would have more engagement than a micro influencer due to the sheer difference in followers, but you’d be wrong! I’ve noticed that on every platform across the board, the highest engagement was from the small, engaged communities. A survey I found said that 91% of businesses said that Influencer Marketing is an effective form of marketing, with 66% of those same companies stating that they will increase their marketing budgets within the next year. Why should you care about this? You should care because we are all influencers now because of social media, even if you don’t recognize it! You will never know how many sales you have made because other people saw where you ate, what you wore, what you bought and decided to purchase because of you.

Making Money

People ask me how to make money as an influencer all the time, but there are so many different avenues you can utilize to create revenue. There are sponsorships, brand deals, advertising your services, and simply selling your own products amongst other options. I’ll give you a rough estimate on how much you can make based on my experiences: you can make about 4 times as much money from sponsorships, and about 40 times as much from selling your own products! Not only would these avenues make you money but being an influencer can give you the edge over others when it comes to landing work; being able to say that you are an expert while showing the impact of the content you make can make you a better option to work with in the eyes of a hiring manager. In addition to the other points mentioned, you can also use your influence to reach out and work with brands a lot easier and potentially get stuff out of it! In my case, I reached out to a brand when I was beginning my new podcast and they ended up sending me $10,000 worth of items to help me get started!
